How to identify milkweed

Every milkweed shares one unmistakable flower structure. Learn to read it and the genus becomes obvious; after that, leaves and habitat do the rest.

Start with the flower

Milkweed flowers are unlike anything else in the North American flora. Once you can see the structure, identification to genus takes a second.

Each tiny flower has two tiers:

  • Five petals below, bent sharply backward away from the center. On most species they point down the flower stalk.
  • Five hoods above, forming a crown. In many species each hood contains a curved horn projecting inward over the center.

Nothing else looks like this. The flowers are borne in umbels, clusters where every flower stalk radiates from a single point, like the spokes of an umbrella. An umbel of two-tiered flowers is a milkweed.

Reflexed petals

Five, bent backward. In some species they nearly touch the stalk.

Hoods and horns

Five hoods form a crown; most contain an inward-curving horn. Hood shape is the key to many species.

Umbel

All flower stalks radiate from one point. Umbels may be flat, domed, spherical or nodding.

Then check the sap

Break a leaf. Almost every milkweed bleeds thick white latex within seconds. It is the fastest confirmation there is.

The important exception is butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), whose sap is clear or barely cloudy. If you have an orange-flowered milkweed with clear sap and alternate leaves, you have butterfly weed.

Leaf arrangement narrows it fast

Look at how leaves attach to the stem. This single character splits the genus into three workable groups.

Opposite Two leaves per node, directly facing. The commonest arrangement, seen in common, showy, swamp, purple and poke milkweed.
Alternate One leaf per node, staggered up the stem. Butterfly weed, green antelopehorn, antelope horns and plains milkweed.
Whorled Three or more leaves per node, ringing the stem. Whorled, poison, narrowleaf, woollypod and fourleaf milkweed.

Leaf shape and texture

Once you know the arrangement, shape does most of the remaining work:

  • Thread-fine leaves (1–3 mm wide): whorled milkweed, poison milkweed, plains milkweed, slimleaf milkweed.
  • Narrow, willow-like: swamp milkweed, narrowleaf milkweed, Engelmann's milkweed.
  • Broad and oblong with a pale midrib: common milkweed, prairie milkweed.
  • Nearly circular: broadleaf milkweed, pallid milkweed.
  • Heart-shaped and clasping: heartleaf milkweed in the West, clasping milkweed in the East.
  • Effectively leafless: rush milkweed and whitestem milkweed in the desert Southwest.

Texture matters too. Common and showy milkweed are downy; prairie milkweed is completely smooth; California and woollypod milkweed are thickly white-woolly; clasping milkweed is waxy and hairless with wavy edges.

Pods seal the identification

From late summer, the follicles are diagnostic:

  • Warty and covered in soft spines: common milkweed.
  • Woolly, with blunt bumps: showy milkweed.
  • Smooth and spindle-shaped: swamp milkweed, butterfly weed, most narrow-leaved species.
  • Smooth with a few short projections: prairie milkweed.
  • Curved and pointing upward: antelope horns, which is where the name comes from.

Inside, every species but one packs brown seeds overlapping like fish scales, each with a tuft of silky floss. The exception is aquatic milkweed, whose seeds have no floss at all.

The lookalikes that catch people out

Dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum) is the big one. It also has milky sap, opposite leaves and a similar habitat. The differences:

Butterfly bush, swamp milkweed lookalikes in the Vernonia and Eupatorium groups, and young pokeweed are all occasionally mistaken for milkweed in leaf. Break a stem: no white latex, not a milkweed. Then check for the two-tiered flower.

A four-step field routine

  1. Umbel of two-tiered flowers? If yes, it is a milkweed.
  2. Milky sap? Confirms it, unless the flowers are orange and the sap clear, in which case: butterfly weed.
  3. Leaf arrangement. Opposite, alternate or whorled? This eliminates most of the genus.
  4. Leaf shape, flower color, habitat and state. Cross-reference against the species list for your state and you will usually have one or two candidates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a plant is milkweed?

Look for an umbel of flowers where each flower has five petals bent sharply backward and five hoods forming a crown above them. Then break a leaf: almost every milkweed bleeds thick white latex. That combination is unique to the genus.

What is the difference between milkweed and dogbane?

Both have milky sap and opposite leaves, but dogbane has small simple bell-shaped flowers rather than the two-tiered milkweed flower, reddish repeatedly branching stems, and long thin paired pods instead of one fat follicle.

Which milkweed does not have milky sap?

Butterfly weed, Asclepias tuberosa. Its sap is clear or only faintly cloudy, and it also has alternate rather than opposite leaves, giving two exceptions in one plant.
